Is OneShare Health exempt from Obamacare? Keep reading to find out.
You may know all about the Affordable Care Act, but does it apply to OneShare Health? As a Health Care Sharing Ministry (HCSM), OneShare Health’s ACA religious exemption is one of our most attractive features. As with all HCSMs under 26 USC § 5000A(d)(2)(B)(ii), OneShare Health’s members are exempt from the ACA individual mandate requirement of the U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("ACA"). While the federal individual mandate of the ACA was repealed in December 2017, effective in 2019, you may wish to consult your legal advisor regarding any relevant individual mandates under state law.
how does a health care sharing ministry work?
Is OneShare Health considered health insurance?
First things first, OneShare Health is not insurance. Instead, we are an ACA-exempt Health Care Sharing Ministry that facilitates the cost of medical needs for and through our Members by means of medical cost sharing.
Does OneShare provide quality health care even with their ACA exemption status?
Of course. In fact, your health and well-being remain our top priority as we continue to deliver an unparalleled Member experience that includes: a nationwide Provider Network which enables 96% of the U.S. population access to a credentialed health care provider, personalized assistance understanding your chosen OneShare Health Program, Membership Discount Services, 24/7 Telemedicine for a 100% Shared Consult Fee, and much, much more.
What Does ACA-Exempt Mean?
As a Health Care Sharing Ministry (HCSM), as with all HCSMs under 26 USC § 5000A(d)(2)(B)(ii), OneShare Health’s members are exempt from the ACA individual mandate requirement of the U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("ACA"). While the federal individual mandate of the ACA was repealed in December 2017, effective in 2019, you may wish to consult your legal advisor regarding any relevant individual mandates under state law.
The ACA includes "Religious Exemptions," allowing OneShare Health Members exemption from the individual mandate to purchase health insurance. Members of a qualified Health Care Sharing Ministry, such as OneShare Health, are exempt if they share a common set of ethical or religious beliefs and share medical expenses among themselves in accordance with those beliefs.
What are OneShare Health’s Beliefs?
As a Health Care Sharing Ministry with origins in the Anabaptist faith, OneShare Health welcomes and unites those who agree with our core biblical principles and Statement of Beliefs relating to life, health, and caring for others. At OneShare,
- We Believe in the authority of Scripture and the sanctity and dignity of every human life created by God with special meaning and purpose. II Timothy 3:16; Psalm 139:13-14
- We Believe that every individual has the constitutional and religious right and duty to worship God in freedom. II Corinthians 3:17; U.S. Const. amend. I
- We Believe and agree in the biblical and ethical principle of sharing with those who are less fortunate and who experience medical needs. Galatians 6:2
- We Believe and agree that it is our responsibility to God and our fellow Members to engage in accountable, healthy living, and to avoid habits and behaviors which are harmful to the body. I Corinthians 6:19-20
- We Believe in the power of prayer to save lives, to heal lives, and to unite our Members in common purpose and community, and we believe that prayer should be a fundamental practice of daily life. I John 5:14; Philippians 4:6-7
