Healthy Eating Tips for Busy Parents
Eat Dinner as a Family Whenever Possible
Even if you have to set up folding chairs at your kitchen table and eat while watching a movie on TV, aim to sit down as a family at least once a day. Studies show that families who frequently eat together—and make family meal plans and snacks an integral part of their family life—are much less likely to develop obesity, high cholesterol levels, or diabetes. Why? Because they’re more likely to make healthy choices when they’re in charge of what they eat and how much they’re eating. Need inspiration on what to cook for your family dinner? Here are some quick and healthy recipes for busy families!
Lead by Example
Kids are sponges and will absorb whatever you put in front of them. If you don’t have time to be healthy, neither will they. Kids eat what we eat and play as much as we do, so it’s important to set a good example when it comes to food choices and activity levels.
Learn to Be Flexible
More than anything, parents have to be flexible. One kid is sleeping and another one wakes up in a fit of tears because he scraped his knee during recess. Kids aren’t rigid; they do things on their own schedule, and they don’t care what you have planned.
If you meal plan for your family or meal prep some easy dinners ahead of time, you can have dinner ready at 5:30 or 6:00 or 6:30 or whatever time frame you need. Flexibility and preparation are key! Instead of getting angry, learn how to adapt quickly so that everyone—including yourself—is still happy and everyone's bellies are full.
