Get Excited About Your Kids' Healthy Eating
Find What They Love
Children eat what they love, and often develop strong cravings for specific types of food. So, while you're trying you get your kids eating healthy, you can’t allow them to make unhealthy food choices every day, you can help them make smart food choices that they feel good about by learning more about their preferences. For example, if your child loves vegetables with ranch dressing but not vinaigrette or ketchup, find a low-calorie recipe for ranch dressing and incorporate it into their daily meal plan.
Show Them the Numbers
Research shows that an overweight child is more likely to become an overweight adult. When you explain that eating healthy can help your kids avoid these potentially debilitating health risks, they’ll be more likely to try it out. Don't scare them, of course, but make your kids aware of the logic! They may understand more than you expect.
Put It in Their Hands
If you’re dealing with kids, giving them small amounts of control can go a long way toward engaging them in a positive way. When you're making your weekly meal plan, let your kids choose from various food options and encourage them to take an active role in meal preparation and cooking. Not only will they be more invested in eating what they create, but it will also help prevent some food battles (no one likes being told what they can or cannot eat).
