Emergency Room or Urgent Care?

By OneShare Health on 1:00 PM on August 16, 2024

In the moment of an incident, it can be hard to decide whether you should seek medical attention from a Primary Care Physician, Urgent Care Facility, or Emergency Room. The reality of the cost of care doesn't hit you until you receive the medical bill.

When to Choose Primary Care or Urgent Care

If you have a cold, flu, allergies, a minor cut, rash, or fever, seek a Primary Care or Urgent Care facility. Do NOT go to the Emergency Room! Go straight to the Emergency room or call 911 if you have uncontrolled bleeding, are experiencing a stroke, or are having a heart attack. If you are unsure that your medical situation is emergency room-worthy, call your primary care physician and ask about it. If it's the weekend and your Primary Care Physician is closed, go to an Urgent Care Facility.

Emergency Room Visits and Cost Considerations

Emergency Room Visits for life-threatening and life-altering situations are eligible for sharing at a $500 ER Visit Fee up to $10,000. If the ER bill is over $10,000, your ISA will apply. If you go to an Emergency Room for a cold or allergies, the share request will not be eligible for sharing and will be denied.

OneShare Health Program Options

OneShare Health Catastrophic and Classic Programs offer access to Virtual Urgent Care Visits through Clever Health at a $0 visit fee. It is a very convenient way to seek medical attention vs. driving to a Primary Care Office and waiting to see a doctor. Our Classic Programs also offer $40 Primary Care Visit Fees and $75 Urgent Care Visit Fees.

If you do not have any type of health care sharing or other reimbursement arrangement, the costs can be damaging.  Wait times are also a factor.  Here is a glimpse of what medical costs you could face without any help.
