You know that old saying, ‘if you don’t use it you lose it?’ Well, that applies to your heart, too. To keep your heart healthy, it is important to get daily exercise no matter what age you are. While that can be intimidating to hear, that doesn’t mean you need to hit the gym hard every day.

Here’s how to have a healthy heart and get good exercise without sacrificing the things you love.
Examine your daily routine.
Are there areas where you cut corners or binge in excess that can be reigned in? If you watch a television show each evening, consider standing on the commercial breaks, rather than sitting through the entire hour. Are you constantly sneaking a sugary snack in the afternoons? Choose a filling but healthy snack like nuts or prepare a boiled egg instead. Do you work to find the closest parking space in the lot? Try purposefully parking further away to build in more walking time. Identify areas to make small but meaningful changes in your daily routine.
Incorporate fun into your exercise.
Do things that make you happy like dancing, walking your dog, golfing, etc. While you’re out and about doing the things you love, concentrate on little ways you can get more out of this time. A simple walk can have benefits ranging from improving your endurance for cardio, lifting your mood, practicing good posture habits, and working a myriad of muscles to give a boost to your overall health! Love music? Try adding a little dancing while you jam to your favorite tunes. If you have a sport you love, make time to regularly play so you can have fun and exercise at the same time.
Make time for sleep and rest.
We all feel better when we’re well-rested, but did you know that good sleep and rest are two very important factors in how to keep your heart healthy? Lack of sleep can increase your blood pressure and inflammation, which can be concerning for heart health. Whether it’s simple meditation, a stricter sleep routine, or just a few deep breaths throughout the day, purposeful rest and sleep can bring big benefits over time.
