We’re here to give you the lowdown on what it means to live a healthier, joyful life with these 7 basic health tips!

As a Christian Health Care Sharing Ministry, OneShare Health is all about helping our Members pursue positive lifestyle changes that encourage accountability and healthy livings habits. Generally, a healthy lifestyle includes eating nutritious foods, engaging in physical exercise, maintaining positive relationships with family, friends, and peers, and developing productive work habits (especially during Shelter in Place).

Modify your diet to include healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, healthy fats, and omega-3 fatty acids. According to the World Health Organization, people who make fruits and vegetables a regular part of their diet have a “significantly lower risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain types of cancer.”

At the same time, control your consumption of unhealthy foods—red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, trans fat, and sodium—as much as possible. Remember, knowing how to eat healthy doesn’t mean depriving yourself of the foods you love, rather moderating intake and controlling portion sizes throughout your day. Get a good night’s rest as often as you possibly can. WebMD suggests that well-rested people not only “cope better with stress, but may also have better control of their appetites.”

Adopt a positive attitude. Right now, while times are uncertain and Shelter in Place continues to be the norm for many Americans, we realize how difficult it can be to focus on the good. However, a positive mindset is not about ignoring everything negative in our lives and in the world. It’s about recognizing both the positive and the negative and making the conscious choice to focus on the positive.

YOU are in control of your thoughts. So, train your mind to see the good in EVERY situation.

Organize regular family meals where you and your loved ones can regroup, decompress, and dissect the day’s events. In addition to generating discussion, regular family meals encourage nutritious eating and lively conversation.

Find time for laughter. Did you know that laughing can produce a number of physical and psychological benefits? In fact, advocates of Laughter Therapy believe it is useful for those in the midst of a serious crisis and those facing everyday stresses. Even just 10-15 minutes of laughter a day burns about 50 calories, while also raising levels of disease-fighting immunoglobulins by 14 percent.

Find solace through prayer or meditation. “Contemplation is good for your soul, helps you cope with the demands of daily life, and may even help lower your blood pressure,” according to WebMD. So, set up your own yoga or meditation space at home, and enjoy some peace.

Cut out unhealthy habits, like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. The CDC warns that “Smoking leads to disease and disability and harms nearly every organ system of the body.” And even if you aren’t abusing alcohol regularly, you can still experience its short-term effects on the mind and body, including, but not limited to, lowered inhibitions, poor social judgment, and trouble concentrating (
