A Personal List from One Believer to Another. If you’ve ever stood in a bookstore or scrolled through online reviews thinking, “Which Christian book should I read next?”, you’re not alone. I’ve been there. And over the years, I’ve read some powerful books that didn’t just give me information, they shaped how I live out my faith day by day.
So, I put together this list for you. These are books that have challenged me, encouraged me, and even brought comfort during some harder seasons. I hope they do the same for you.
1. Knowing God by J.I. Packer
This one took me a little longer to get through, but wow, was it worth it! Packer doesn’t sugarcoat anything. He dives deep into who God is, and by the end of the book, I felt like I knew God more, not just in my head, but in my heart. It’s the kind of book you’ll want to highlight and reread.
2. The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence
This book is incredibly short, but don’t let that fool you. Brother Lawrence was a humble monk who found a way to bring God into everything, even scrubbing pots. His writing made me realize that I don’t have to be in a church pew to be with God. I can be in traffic, doing laundry, or answering emails—and still be near Him.
3. The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom
I’ll be honest, this book broke me in the best way. Corrie’s story is intense, and it’s real. She and her family risked everything to protect Jewish refugees during World War II. What’s most incredible is how she held onto her faith, even inside a concentration camp. I walked away from this book with a bigger view of God and a stronger sense of gratitude.
4. The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
This one challenged me. Bonhoeffer doesn’t just talk about following Jesus, he lived it out, even to the point of death. He calls out what he calls “cheap grace,” and I’ll be honest, it made me pause and reevaluate how I view obedience and sacrifice. It’s a tough read, but it’s the kind that sticks with you.
5. Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster
If you’ve ever thought, I wish I had more structure in my spiritual life, this book is for you. Foster walks through spiritual practices like prayer, fasting, and simplicity, but in a way that feels practical, not overwhelming. It helped me slow down and be more intentional with my time and my relationship with God.
A Few More That Left a Mark:
-
Desiring God by John Piper – This one helped me realize that joy and faith aren’t at odds, they actually belong together.
-
Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero – I didn’t expect this book to hit so close to home, but it really did. It's honest, healing, and full of grace.
-
Prayer by Timothy Keller – It took my prayer life from routine to meaningful. Keller’s approach is both thoughtful and deeply personal.
