When tragedy strikes—like the recent flooding in Kerrville, Texas—it’s natural for our hearts to cry out: “Why would God let this happen?” As waters rose and homes were overtaken, families were displaced, memories lost, and lives deeply shaken. For many in our faith community, that question lingers heavily in the air.

But here’s the truth that gives us peace: God doesn’t cause these things to happen.

Understanding God's Role in Tragedy

It’s not uncommon in the aftermath of disaster for people to say, “If God is good, why is there so much suffering?” It's one of the oldest questions humanity has wrestled with. But the Bible reminds us that we live in a broken world, a world affected by sin, free will, and the natural consequences that came after the fall of man in Genesis.

This doesn’t mean God turns His face from us. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). He doesn’t orchestrate our pain; He walks with us through it. He weeps with us. He redeems what’s been lost.

Kerrville’s Community of Compassion

In the face of the Kerrville floods, we’ve seen heartbreaking loss, but we’ve also seen God’s love reflected through people: neighbors helping neighbors, churches opening their doors, and volunteers forming human chains to rescue the stranded. That’s God working through His people.

God may not stop every storm, but He equips His children to rise up in the middle of it.

Hope Doesn’t Drown

When bad things happen, it’s easy to feel abandoned—but God never leaves us. He is not the cause of the floodwaters. He is the lifeboat in the storm. He is the strength behind every helping hand, the peace in every prayer, and the promise that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him” (Romans 8:28).

Evil exists. Heartbreak happens. But God is not the author of tragedy. He is the healer within it.

How We Respond as a Community

As Members of OneShare Health, we are part of a nationwide Community of believers who lift one another up,  not only in health, but in hope. Together, we share not just Medical Expenses, but burdens, joys, and prayers.

If your heart is heavy today, whether from what happened in Kerrville or from your own storm, know this:

God sees.
God listens.
And God is still good.

He hasn’t promised us a world without trouble. But He has promised to walk with us through the fire and never forsake us (Isaiah 43:2).
