What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is the lack of ability to fall asleep at night or simply just having trouble sleeping. When you have insomnia, it seems like no matter how hard you attempt to rest, you either cannot fall asleep or wake up feeling unrested. Some insomnia symptoms that you might have insomnia include daytime tiredness, irritability, waking up too early, simply finding it difficult to fall asleep at night. Often medication is prescribed to help cope with these symptoms. However, these medications may cause more issues and have nasty side effects like depression, suicidal thoughts, addiction habits, and more.

Tips to help you sleepLimit Caffeine

In our brain, indulging in any amount of caffeine can block the process of our body going to sleep and cause us to remain alert and active. By reducing your caffeine intake, you can help your brain begin to shut down earlier in the day and start your sleep cycle quicker.

Tips to help you sleepAvoid Working in Bed

When you do daily tasks in bed, such as working, for example, your brain starts to associate doing work with being in bed. This can cause you to be more alert even while trying to wind down. While our bodies build a tolerance to this, partaking in an excessive amount of activity while in bed will keep you awake even when you do not want to be. This concept also works with watching television in bed. Your body will fight to stay awake as you are watching. It is in your best interest to limit your activities to just sleeping in bed. Not doing activities other than sleep will train your brain to sleep.

Tips to help you sleepGet Regular Exercise

According to the sleep foundation, engaging in regular exercise can act as a sleeping pill in terms of lulling your body to sleep. It is known to realign your internal body clock, relieve stress and depression, and change your body core temperature allowing it to cool down.
