According to Verywell Mind, “Hobbies bring a sense of fun and freedom to life that can help to minimize the impact of chronic stress.” They even reported that those who engage in physical leisure activities for at least 20 minutes once a week are less susceptible to fatigue.

So, let’s get to it! Here are five productive things to do if you're stuck inside or if you're in quarantine—and who knows, they may even last you beyond that!

Productive Hobby Ideas for When You're Stuck Inside

Learn to knit! Don’t be so quick to dismiss this one! You may have seen sweet little Granny Mae knit a time or two, but did you know that knitting, crocheting, stitching, and embroidering all require intense focus just like learning to play an instrument does or getting your mind right before the ‘big game.’ It doesn’t matter who you are or how old you are, knitting reduces stress and turns out some pretty neat keepsakes.

Is this your next hobby?

Get physical! This one’s pretty self-explanatory, but it could be a life-changing hobby depending on your level of commitment. Plus, you don’t have to budget for a gym membership to get the exercise you need. Plan for a 30-minute walk or jog daily, buy some free weights and set up your very own ‘Gym for Muscles’ inside your garage, find a yoga tutorial on YouTube—your options aren’t as limited as you may think!

Ready to start getting fit in your own home?

Learn a new language! Did you know that many language teachers host classes online? Which is both convenient and adherent to social distancing guidelines. Knowing more than one language can greatly improve your memory, sharpen your mind, and enhance your concentration. Learning a new language could be a great bonding experience for you and the rest of your family, too. French, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, Sign Language—take your pick!

Practice calligraphy! Wondering what to do inside? No one said you had to be a handwriting connoisseur to learn the art of calligraphy, which involves long, steady strokes of a ballpoint, gel, or fountain pen to produce beautiful handwritten material such as wedding invitations, Christmas cards, and personalized notes to friends and family. This could be an excellent opportunity to strike up a conversation with your old pen pal!

Start blogging! Or vlogging! Whichever you choose, blogging and vlogging are equally creative forms of self-expression (and the goal of a hobby is to express yourself, right?!). Just make sure you establish the topic you want to explore and an audience. These are going to be your people, so whatever content you create should be based on what you think would most appeal to them! Oh, and you’ll want to make sure you have access to a computer or video camera – those are essential!
