A Bible Scripture for Strength: 10 Verses to Encourage You Through Difficult Times

Written by OneShare Health | 1:05 PM on June 22, 2026

Some days, strength feels impossible to find.

A difficult diagnosis. Financial uncertainty. The loss of a loved one. A season of waiting that seems to stretch on forever. Life can place burdens on our shoulders that feel too heavy to carry alone.

During these moments, it's easy to feel discouraged, overwhelmed, or even forgotten. Yet throughout Scripture, God repeatedly reminds His people that they are never alone. His strength is available when ours runs out. His peace remains when circumstances feel uncertain. And His promises provide hope when the road ahead seems unclear.

If you're walking through a difficult season today, take a few moments to reflect on these powerful Bible verses for strength and encouragement.

1. Isaiah 41:10

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Fear often grows when we focus on the uncertainty around us. God's response is simple yet profound: I am with you.

Notice that God doesn't promise a life free from challenges. Instead, He promises His presence in the middle of them. Whatever you're facing today, you do not face it alone.

2. Psalm 46:1

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."

When storms arrive unexpectedly, we naturally search for shelter. The psalmist reminds us that God Himself is our refuge.

Not just in the past. Not someday in the future. He is an ever-present help right now, offering strength and comfort exactly when we need it most.

3. Philippians 4:13

"I can do all this through him who gives me strength."

This verse is often quoted as motivation to achieve great things, but Paul's original meaning is even more powerful.

Writing from prison, Paul explained that he had learned to be content in every circumstance—whether he had plenty or was in need. His confidence wasn't rooted in his own abilities but in Christ's strength sustaining him through every season.

Sometimes God's strength doesn't remove the struggle. Sometimes it helps us endure it faithfully.

4. Joshua 1:9

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Imagine receiving this command while preparing to lead an entire nation into unfamiliar territory.

Joshua had every reason to feel intimidated, yet God repeatedly told him to be strong and courageous because His presence would go before him.

The same truth applies today. Courage isn't the absence of fear. It's trusting God enough to move forward despite it.

5. 2 Corinthians 12:9

"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."

Most of us would prefer strength over weakness. Yet God often works through our weakest moments to reveal His greatest power.

When we finally acknowledge that we cannot carry every burden ourselves, we create space for God's grace to do what only He can do.

What if the weakness you've been trying to hide is actually where God wants to show His strength?

6. Psalm 34:17-18

"The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

One of the most comforting truths in Scripture is that God draws near to hurting people.

If you've ever wondered whether God sees your pain, this verse provides the answer. He hears. He sees. He cares.

And when your heart feels broken, He is closer than you realize.

7. Romans 8:28

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

This verse doesn't say that all things are good.

Loss is painful. Trials are difficult. Heartbreak is real.

But even in circumstances we would never choose, God is still at work. He can bring purpose from pain, growth from hardship, and hope from situations that seem hopeless.

8. Deuteronomy 31:6

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."

Few promises are more reassuring than this one.

People may disappoint us. Circumstances may change. Plans may fall apart.

But God's faithfulness remains constant. He never abandons His children, even when the journey becomes difficult.

9. Matthew 11:28

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

Jesus doesn't tell weary people to try harder.

He doesn't tell them to figure everything out first.

Instead, He simply says, "Come to me."

Many of us carry burdens we were never meant to carry alone. Christ invites us to place those burdens in His hands and find true rest in His presence.

10. Galatians 6:2

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

God never intended for us to navigate life's challenges in isolation.

One of His greatest gifts is the support of a caring Christian community. Through prayer, encouragement, and practical acts of kindness, believers can help one another through difficult seasons.

This biblical principle of carrying one another's burdens remains at the heart of Christian fellowship and service.

Finding Strength Through Faith

The people we read about in Scripture were not strangers to hardship. David faced wilderness seasons. Elijah battled discouragement. Paul endured imprisonment, persecution, and uncertainty.

Yet through every challenge, God remained faithful.

The same God who strengthened Joshua before an uncertain future, comforted David in times of distress, and sustained Paul through unimaginable trials is still at work today.

Whatever challenge you're facing right now, remember that God's strength is not reserved for people who have everything figured out. His strength is often most visible when we feel weakest. When your own strength begins to fail, His never does.

Lean into His Word. Spend time in prayer. Allow fellow believers to encourage and support you. And trust that God is walking beside you every step of the way.
