How to Get More Exercise When You Walk the Dog

Don't Just Walk, Run With Your Dog

Running with your dog is a great way to get more exercise. It’s also a fun bonding time! (Note: Always make sure that both you and your pet are in good shape before getting out there and speeding up the pace, stay safe!)

Add Weighted Vest Exercises

Take your dog-walking routine up a notch by adding weighted vest exercises. A quick search for a weighted vest yields dozens of options, but if you don’t want to spend money on a new purchase, you can just load up with an old backpack or duffel bag filled with books or whatever heavy items you have lying around.

Try Speed Walking

Put on your favorite tunes and head outside for a walk with your dog. But instead of simply strolling, try speed walking for ten minutes and then slow down for another ten. This can help you get more exercise when you walk your dog. Just remember that as much as you love Fido, he may not be too pleased with a sudden burst of speed. So ease into it—for both of your sakes!

Incorporate Plyometrics

One of the best ways to get more exercise when you walk your dog is by incorporating some plyometrics into your routine. Plyometrics is a type of exercise that uses both speed and force. And, if you have an excitable dog or puppy, it could come in handy. Plus, it’s pretty fun and feels natural once you get going! Here is an example of a quick cardio plyometric exercise you can try out next time you take Fido on a walk.
