For readers who aren’t familiar, a non-profit organization (NPO), also known as a “nonbusiness entity” or “not-for-profit organization,” is one that is dedicated to furthering a particular social cause or advocating for a shared point of view. Rather than distributing income to the organization's shareholders, leaders, or members, a non-profit will use its surplus of revenue to further achieve its ultimate objective, which is typically humanitarian in nature.
Non-profits are tax-exempt, or charitable, meaning they do not pay income tax on the money that they receive for their organization.
How does OneShare Health qualify as a non-profit organization?
In OneShare Health’s case, whenever there is a surplus of sharing expenses by our Sharing Community, we dedicate these funds to our Mission in Motion projects, which support charitable causes like the Tim Tebow Foundation—a Christian charity that exists to bring Faith, Hope and Love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need. Thanks to our Sharing Community, we’ve been able to donate nearly $1.7 million in charitable funds to various charities nationwide!
What cause does OneShare Health advocate for?
As a non-profit Christian Health Care Sharing Ministry, OneShare Health is dedicated to providing compassionate care to all, to carrying one another’s physical and spiritual burdens through prayer, encouragement, and sharing the cost of medical needs. We believe we can help cultivate and inspire healthier, joyful communities through our Membership Programs. In our view, health care should not discriminate which is why our cost-sharing programs are designed to be affordable, flexible, and inclusive.
What is a Health Care Sharing Ministry?
Health Care Sharing Ministries (HCSMs) are organizations that facilitate the sharing of health care costs among individual Members who have common ethical or religious beliefs. By law, HCSMs must be non-profits with Section 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt status.
Members of Health Care Sharing Ministries are exempt from the individual mandate requirement of the U.S. Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("PPACA"). The individual shared responsibility provision ("individual mandate") of the ACA was repealed in December 2017, effective in 2019. This means members of Health Care Sharing Ministries like OneShare Health are not required to have insurance as outlined in the individual mandate of the ACA.
