Should I Take Supplements?

The Problem

If you read articles on health and nutrition, you probably have encountered a few that go something like "Top 3 Supplements Everyone Should Take." They might discuss products for your body and explain why certain supplements are important for overall body health. But if you read enough of these articles, you know that not all supplements are created equal.

While there are options, not all supplements offer benefits that help your body's goals. With so many claiming to be some magical superfood, it can be hard to tell what is worth spending money on and what isn't.

The Solution

The truth is, supplements can do a lot of good. But, first, you must research that what you are buying has been known to improve your body goals.

The main reason most people take nutritional supplements is to prevent or treat a nutritional deficiency. Supplements can do that, but some of them might be unnecessary. The real key is taking a good daily multivitamin, eating well, and exercising regularly. A healthy diet usually meets your nutrient needs, and if you have any concerns about deficiencies, discuss them with your physician.

If you have any specific questions about whether you should use a particular supplement or avoid one, talk to a registered dietitian or your doctor; they can help guide you in making decisions based on your individual health goals and needs.

Should You Take Supplements or Not?

For most people taking supplements, adding vitamins and minerals to their diet works in tandem with other lifestyle changes like eating right and getting more exercise—but for some folks (those who are already healthy), supplements can get them there faster.

There isn't an all-encapsulating method we can give you on how to pick out what supplements you need, but a daily multivitamin is a good start. Discussing with your doctor after a physical or blood test to determine deficiency is the perfect first step, so follow up with your Provider if you want to pursue supplements for your health!
